Overview
FanDuel TV+ is an on-demand connected TV app where you can stream exclusive sports, fantasy, betting and racing content. This project brings betting into the connected TV world, allowing users to view odds on live and upcoming sports and place a bet within the FanDuel Sportsbook app.
• Test engagement with upcoming sports
• Make FanDuel TV+ feel like a sports betting product & enable cross-product opportunities
• Increase viewership of live international sports
An initial research study took place, where users were given two prototypes with the task of placing a bet on upcoming games. Option A displayed bet options within a screen overlay menu and Option B presented the bet options in an accordion menu. Each prototype received various feedback with Option A receiving the most positive feedback. Users thought this was the most intuitive user experience and felt less cluttered.
After an initial prototype evaluation was conducted in person with users, the design team took customer feedback and implemented changes to the designs. We put the new designs infront of users to validate the design direction & uncover any usability issues.
Research Objectives
• Determine if placement of related bets button was intuitive
• Identify any usability issues with the new designs
• Identify expectations around ‘looking for more’ feature & whether it was intuitive
• Validate design direction coming out of initial testing
Methodoligies used
• Qualitative Usability Test: The facilitator administers tasks to the participant.
Key Findings
• New designs are simple and easy to use
• Users were frustrated at the lack of efficiency in accessing the bet squeezeback
• Users were confused about what “Live Markets” meant “Looking for more?” feature was intuative
User Flows
There are two different ways in which a user can view odds - live games, where the user can watch the live stream as well as view dynamic odds for various markets. The other is upcoming games - which would only allow users to view and place bets on markets.
In order to create an experience that kept the user in on the live action it was obvious that one solution would not be viable for both live and upcoming games. These actions are completely different. For upcoming games it felt important to make best use of the real estate where no video stream would be present.
Design Explorations
There were several key areas to solve for as part of this feature;
• Game tiles - displaying team, league and odds information
• Bet tiles - displaying bet odds and considering the interactions
• Placing a bet on a live game within the video player
• Placing a bet on an upcoming game in a fullscreen view
Game Tiles appear on the homescreen, which are grouped into rows for each league. This explores how odds for the top 3 markets can be shown on a tile, as well as important game information.
Bet Tiles are the selectable tiles that appear within the 'squeezeback' view on a live game stream. Each tile represents a market, which users can interact with to place a bet.
This is an exploration within the 'squeezeback' view on a live game stream. The most challenging aspect was being able to simplify the experience and taking the user through the flow in minimal steps.
I explored several layouts for creating hierarchy as well as allowing the user to see additional information. The final solution only surfaces the main content to avoid cognitive load for the user.
Users can select either a live game or upcoming game. The tile focus ring displays the title ‘Watch & Bet’ or ‘View odds’ to indicate the actions available when they select the tile.
The stream displays in the squeezeback view by default to introduce the betting features available for the game. Once a bet is selected the user has two ways of taking the bet.
Users can view odds and take a bet for the upcoming game. The side navigation allows the users to view odds for other upcoming games within a 24 hour period, keeping them in the betting experience.
Surfacing other markets outwith the 3 popular game markets. Using tabs to display other markets future proofs the feature for additional markets when they become available to the platform.
